Rog, the thing with the Duratec plug leads is that the sealing rings have vent notches in them so they are bound to let water down to the plug chamber. Well my 07 Duratec was like that.
Blimey John, surprised you got them out! That’s an interesting feature that I hadn’t noticed. Yes it could be a possible path but I'm still thinking that you would need a fairly deep puddle in the cover to get up over the upstand and top hat. On a Duratec it might be worth packing those 4 annular grooves with a PTFE grease or DC4 electrical compound.
