It’s not a continuous clicking but one click/clunk then u have to release and push the starter again. Sometimes it can take 20 plus attempts for me
Last time this happened to a pals car, with similar symptoms I stripped the motor to find the brushes had worn so low that the commutator was damaged and full of carbon/copper goo, causing a sort of 'short out' of power & the battery struggled to rotate the motor
