Absolutely right. A car (or anything) is only worth what people are prepared to pay for it, not what the owner believes it is worth.

Getting the return on one's investment in the form of enjoying the ownership is exactly the right way to go, and amortising over a period is a splendid idea, you can't really enjoy a car if it owes you money as you're always thinking of the resale vale.
