I have no scientific base other than in my experience and I have replaced on Morgans two sets of original tyres that were over 10 years old with plenty of tread left, in one instance had only done just under 5k miles on my Roadster. What I felt immediately was a change in the compliance of the suspension, the new softer sidewall coped more easily in absorbing ruts etc and secondly and most importantly (using the same tyre manufacturers as originally fitted to the cars) a major step change in the wet handling of the both cars, The cars were very much less prone to slipping and sliding on wet surfaces.
As I said a subjective experience, not founded on trying to convince myself I had done the right thing by changing the tyres, but a distinct improvement in compliance and wet handling on both Morgans..
