The problem Boeing had was basically stretching the operational environment for which existing type approvals were originally tested, and the approvals given, with increasingly larger airframes without seeking further type approval. So whilst I have no problem with your "The man that never made a mistake never MADE anything" I would add a caution if they learnt from their mistakes.
