Much has been written here about wet sumping, and the (possible) need to drain the sump before starting after a long layup due to the oil flowing back past the oil pump gears and into the sump. When you crank it over with a full sump there is no place for the oil to go except through the crankcase breather (aided by engine vacuum) and into the intake.
