London Bridge in the 1920s retained much of its classic form while adjusting to the pace of a modernising capital. The bridge carried a mix of pedestrians, buses, and early cars between the financial district and South London. Iron railings lined the edges, and gas lamps still lit the way after dark. Office workers crossed the river in great numbers during the morning and evening rush, forming waves of motion with briefcases and newspapers in hand. The view from the bridge revealed a skyline of spires and cranes, with barges passing steadily below. London Bridge offered a daily journey between tradition and progress.
