As obnoxious as ads on your car screens are, I find the 'subscription model' for functions equally, if not more, annoying.
Some car makers have mooted (not sure if any have implemented it!) that they would like to move to a commercial arrangement where most cars come will all the options (heated seats, for instance) and the owner pays an annual subscription to 'activate' the option. So the car will have the hardware installed from new but you will only be able to access it by paying an annual subscription. I can see things like 'active cruise control', parking cameras, parking sensors, etc, falling into this new form of motoring.
First time I read of this was indeed related to BMW relative to switching on or off the functionality of "extras" dependant on rental agreements....? I regularly get upgrade offers from Tesla all available to be programmed in remotely. Technological advance brings with it a whole new world of possibilities. ???
