I have been told that apparently you can`t believe everything you read on t`interweb For sure with air in a hydraulic system you may even have to pump the pedal to stop crunching gears even with the pedal buried in the carpet..... Pushing the pedal has to work against the springs sandwiching the clutch driven plate to the flywheel to create enough space between the flywheel and the clutch pressure plate for the driven plate to spin freely, thus allowing crunch free gear changes...

As the lining material on on the driven plate (similar to brake pad material) wears down over time the pedal generally does not require to travel as far to create enough space between the pressure plate and the flywheel, before the driven plate is free to rotate...

Clutch slip can in time become obvious when either the springs in the pressure plate have become weak, and or the lining material in the driven plate has worn down making the driven plate thinner and thus the engine revs might rise higher than normal relative to road speed achieved, which can be accompanied by a smell similar to that generated by a sticking brake....
