The slotted joints on my Roadster hood frame have quite a lot of room for fore/aft movement/adjustment. I found that getting to the heads of the bolts was easier by grinding the short end of an Allen key to make it shorter.

You can just pivot the hood rails to get access to the bolt heads Peter. See my image above. I rarely use plain Allen keys anymore (unless there is a real access issue) preferring socket ones which allow positive locating so less likely to damage heads.

I agree the various adjustments make for a balancing act though.
