Could somebody kindly advise me of the procedure to dissassemble the internal rod/spring/pawl/button in the handbrake lever. I have the lever off the car:

but I'm wondering now how to extract the threaded rod inside the lever as I want to replace the pawl. It looks like the silver button on the top of the lever is screwed into one end of the internal rod, and the pawl is screwed into the other end. But, northing actually unscrews with the application of moderate force. So I figure I'm probably doing it wrong. Although the photo above shows the set screw in the side of the lever (which locates the pawl), I have already unscrewed and removed that.
