That's the auctioneer taking bids off the wall to get up to the reserve. Years ago I had a car in auction (a very nice low mileage 4-door Metro Van den Plas with sunroof) and there was a very encouraging flurry of bids from all around the room that stopped just below my reserve. I said I would accept the highest bid and was told there hadn't been any!

In my limited experience, you can't rely on the prices reported on the auction company website. My Chummy at auction had a guide price of £10K-£12K. I put in a bid of £8K and the auction ended with "reserve not met". The next day I got an email to say it was mine. No negotiation, the vendor obviously decided it was enough and my bid was binding. The website, however, recorded the reserve price plus premium, over £2K more than I actually paid.
