However, Harley-Davidson was unsuccessful and never managed to patent or successfully trademarked the iconic "potato-potato" sound.The company filed a trademark application for the sound of its V-twin engines in 1994. After six years of fierce legal challenges and opposition from rival motorcycle manufacturers—who argued that many engines using the same V-twin design produce similar sounds—Harley-Davidson abandoned the effort and withdrew its application in 2000.
