I had a very similar issue with an old Land Rover, and it turned out that one of the rear leaf spring axle locating pins had sheared and the rear axle was moving forward/backwards very slightly, producing the symptoms you describe,

However, I note that you've gone over the rear and everything checks out.

I'd probably look at the crosshead and check to see if it's true and if there is any movement.
