I have a K & N filter on 1987 4/4. Pictures below.
The only slight mod, apart from changing the carb jets which were supplied with instructions, is the oil breather. I made a connector to the filter o/o a copper heating tee 15mm to 22mm. Cut the 22mm in half and flatten the remainder which is clamped in place by the top and bottom of the filter case. I believe K & N do a similar piece but I could not obtain one. I haven't bothered with a hot air feed from above the exhaust manifold and this has been no problem.
