My guess is that you have a seperate switch fitted so that you can start cooling before the rad temp unit kicks in.
Most +8s are fitted with one after market because most +8 owners get paranoid about temperature.
Radiator is too small so too hot in summer traffic jams.
change rad for aluminium and its too cold in winter.
The switch is often mounted behind dash ,maybe pull down knob.
