MeyerMog - There are conflicting views on this -- many use the cig socket without any issues. I tried that route and it blew the fuse for it and the sidelights so I now use a connection hard wired through an in-line fuse direct to the battery. To a degree "you takes your chances", you may be one of the lucky ones that can use the cig socket without problems.
I too use a c-tek charger - I've used them successfully for yonks with bikes and cars.
