The breather pipe was too long and indeed that was what had caused the initial failure - as fitted at the factory it was left uncut, so had an acute bend which strained the (right angle) attachement and evntually caused a split where it joins the main hose. When I fitted the new one, I shortened the breather tube to an appopriate length. Mine was even more expensive - £120 incl VAT and p/p from Melvyn Rutter - and the first replacement I ordered came "pre-split"!
