had the same problem on my 1974 4/4 4 seater when I changed the hubs to take wires.
One side went quite smoothly using just a hub puller, but on the stubborn side we had to take out the hub plus half shaft combined (just slides out when freed up from all encumbrences) and then the assembly was somehow supported in a vertically mounted hydraulic press ( my mechanic mate was in charge- I wouldn't have dared!
It eventually separated with a deafening "shot gun blast" at about 25 tons pressure"
I didn't dare watch and was much relieved to see all the pieces intact
