Hi,

I've had my S1 for about a year. It came with a remap, the engine management light on, the smell of ammonia from the exhaust (cats I guess), and the occasional working A/C (now degraded to not working at all). It's been okay but I want an expert to put it back to working, either a standard map or one that works well, CATS that work or no CATS, a happy engine with no warning lights, and A/C that you can freeze your lollies on, and a service to boot.

Who should I go to? Should I dump the CATS and go to the recently recommended exhaust supplier? Should I ditch the remap? Does A/C ever work on an AERO S1?

I'm based in Dorset but I guess I'll be travelling a distance to make this happen.

Any advice or recommendations gratefully received.

Phil

Pirate,

I have a series 1 and the aircon is good, the car has done 30k and is 10 years old. After a run the cats will smell a bit, but no more than my old Roadster did. I believe removing the cats will activate the engine management light, not sure, but might even trigger the car into safety mode. There was a post on this some time ago.
If I were getting the car sorted I would head to Richard Thorne, Reading area, they service and work on many series 1 vehicles and they know what they are doing.

I would get it to the factory potentially. Great excuse to get there for a nose about!

Hi Pirate,
My advise would be to go and get the engine ECU plugged in and check fault codes. If nothing is an issue the light can be put out - job done.
As for the cats, if you take these off it will probably fail future MOT's as I believe that from a certain date they have to be in place to achieve the correct emissions. Also there is the issue of lambda sensors (2 per side)- removal will almost certainly mean re-mapping the engine management.
Air con - yes it does work on MK1's & any local air con service center should be able to sort it out, without you having to drive half way across the UK.
I'm having a new exhaust fitted to my MK1 and the cats are staying put as they will cut just below the second cat and weld on the new free flow silencers.
Service work - well it's up to you, but I do all my service work as it's not that difficult - contact me if you require more info. rob.brooks@blueyonder.co.uk or call me on 0117 9571869
Good Luck
Robo

Pirate, I second what Robo has to say.

Had my car 5 years and apart from a recharge when I first bought the car the aircon has been reliable and effective. DIY servicing is not difficult providing you have what it takes to lift the car. I have a service schedule if you need it.

Cheers

Hi Phil
On the A/C issue, this has been a topic on this web page before as it seems that its not always recharging the compressor that is at fault but the switch on the dashboard (if I recall). Mine has also given up two weeks ago and all I get is hot air but the comp works ok. At the moment with this rubbish weather its not an issue, but....!
Regards
T

Thanks. I think Richard Thorne did the remap. Might be worth returning there.

On your doorstep, more or less, talk to Tim Ayres at New Elms before you go trundling around the countryside (save that until the car is sorted thumbs ).

Actually a very good point. I'll see if he can handle the mapping / cat issues.

Thanks

Phil
