Anyone know how the gear knob on my Roadster might be fastened? It's working loose - about 15 degrees rotational movement has developed - but for the life of me I can't see what holds it in place.

There's a collar around the base - through which the stick passes. I can unscrew this - but there are no grub screws or circlips behind it. Although the plastic insert with the H-gate pattern on it shows a tiny bit of movement, I've not been able to see a way of prising it out (it's a precise fit), and I don't want to damage anything.

All tips would be appreciated!

Mine became loose at the weekend. To get it realigned I simply, through trial and error, rotated the gear knob against the locking nut.
If for example the knob needs to be realigned clockwise, screw the locking nut clockwise by a slightly lesser amount and then holding the locking nut screw the knob down onto the locking nut.
I hope that helps.

Whilst at it check that the handbrake knob is not loose. If it is give it a tighten with you hand.

Ah - thanks WW - but mine hasn't got a locking nut! No nut; no grub screws; no circlip. No visible locking mechanism of any kind: and it can't be simply screwed on tight and held through friction, because, as I say, it's now loose - but only for 15 degrees or so either way. It'll also move up and down in relation to the stick - a couple of mm.

I don't have that gear knob, but I suspect that if you push the lower collar down further then you may see some grub screws

Hi Nick, that is strange as mine just looks the same as your one.
I have 'spare' thread under the locking nut.
Maybe you could try to need loosen the locking nut. Put some masking or even better gaffer tape around it to protect the chrome, then loosen with some grips..

If it is the standard gear knob from the current cars it has three grub screws hidden by the locking collar. If the inner sleeve is mounted down hard on to the leather gearlever shroud you will need to push the locking collar down pretty hard to reveal the grub screws. Hopefully the attached photo looks like yours!

I could say that I dashed into the garage and whipped off the gear lever knob to photograph...and then you'd all be impressed! BUT..........I swopped knobs a while ago and the old one was sitting in my desk drawer...right by my camera!

The exposed part of the threaded bush (the bit that's covered by the unscrewable collar on my car) is the plain end - ie the end with no grub screw in your photo. Which seems to indicate that the grub screw (or screws) is up inside the gearknob itself! No amount of shoving down of the collar on my part is exposing the grub screw - because there ain't no grub screw there!

Could you very kindly confirm to me that the gearknob "shell" itself screws onto the threaded bush with a normal right-hand thread on your example? If so, then I'll need to use brute force to unscrew the knob from the bush; re-tighten (and maybe reverse?) the bush, then screw the knob back on.
