Hi guys, have any of you lucky lot who have already got your M3W's opted for the factory immobiliser. It seems pretty reasonable at £125 but who is going to nick one anyway. They stick out like a sore thumb and having a removable steering wheel is a pretty good anti theft device. Roll on week 36!!!

When I looked at this option, like you, I thought that a removable steering wheel and the fact it is rare would keep me safe enough when coupled with some commonsense that borders on the side of paranoid.
But then I thought, I should look into this further to make sure that I have no regrets once the deal is done. So, I went to the trusty Google because people normally only post reviews when they are either a) mad and frustrated or b) work for said items manufacture. Most of the mad and frustrated crowd had right to be so as most of them were stranded some place with a faulty kit and a vehicle they couldn't start. The people who posted neutral or positive reviews were not as convincing that I needed this product when compared to the former.
Turn to the Google yourself, you will see what I mean.

I don't have one on mine, as you say I just remove the steering wheel. I have to as the tonneau cover won't close with the wheel in place.

I read in another post somewhere that a member or was it a tester? thought it would be helpful to have some sort of indicator on the steering wheel, that coincides with a mark on the column, to indicate the correct angle of insertion, whe reinstalling, should the wheels not be straight ahead.
I think an excellent idea and if it could be an enamelled M3W insignia, that fitted in the centre of the wheel, what a bonus!!

Doesn't the removable boss have a key spline machined into it so that it will only fit on in one orientation?

I can confirm that it is remarkably frustrating, trying to find that spline if the wheel is off centre, so much so, that I always make a point of keeping the wheels dead ahead when removing the s/wheel.
Back to the immobiliser question, most insurance companies now ask for one to be fitted, which is a pain if you don't want it, for all the points already mentioned, ie they are a pain in the a55. So, how about a secret switch? Cut a wire somewhere, and insert a switch, easily reached from the drivers seat. The alternative, is to fit a big red batterey isolater key, and remove it when leaving the car, the chances of someone having one are fairly low. You may want to hide a spare one somewhere though in case the first is lost?

In Aus all new vehicles must have an immobiliser fitted.

Hi Paul, just something that has sprung to mind is when I used to run a Cortina 1600E in the 70's I made my own immobiliser out of a mini jack audio plug and socket.
I mounted the mini jack socket under the dash and cut the starter solenoid wire from the ignition switch. If you then bridge the 2 terminals out in the jack plug you have an immobiliser. With jack plug removed there is no link between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid.
Hardly Cat 1 Thatcham but it is still an immobiliser non the less.
I should be taking delivery of my M3W next month I hope, fingers crossed, then I can start playing about measuring front bump steer and trying to shim it out.
Happy motoring.
