Hang the expense - lift it in by hellicopter spend

Seriously though; do take an excursion in a gondola. It may seem a very touristy thing to do but the gondaliers are all well educated guides that speak several languages. It is not only interesting but a completely different view of Venice.

I went there about 10 years ago. A tip I was given was to not have a map and to just wander. Sure enough over the weekend we saw all the main sights and far more besides that was just as interesting.

We're going Den Bosch (Holland) to Livorno. http://www.seat61.com/Motorail.htm is pretty detailed about what's available

Be aware the the Guzzi museum is closed in August. I'm sure swmbo wouldn't want to miss it.

Hi Minikeefy,
Car cost £247 + £178 couple back in August 2011,
Car goes from Paris: Gare de Bercy, passengers from Gare d` Austerlitz which is a short walk (10 min) train was overnight to Nice, prices obviously depend on dates etc.
you can check details here: http://www.raileurope.co.uk/Default.aspx?tabid=2025

we really enjoyed the trip and the train journey was 1 of the comprimises I had to make for `her indoors` due to the distance of the whole journey, hope this helps
regards
Dave

Mike,
Sounds a great trip, can't help with your destination we stayed north west.
I can recommend the motorrail from holland too. The advantage is being able to drive your own car on and off the train, and travel with it. A great restaurant car is an added bonus. Book the late sitting and you can remain at your table til late rather than give it up at 8.30.

@Minikeefy - it also goes to Alessandria in northern Italy, and that's not too far from Nice.

I live about 500 metres from where this photo was taken. If you are in Mandello do get in touch or I will viking you.
