I wondered that Graham but there is no sign of creep, anyway I'll get Brian to check it at next service in 500 miles.
Any one know which gearbox it should have?

Bob, if the 5th gear feels very high, the odds are its the earlier Ford MT75 gearbox with the 0.76:1 ratio. The MX5 box I believe has the 0.814 ratio.

When I was in the factory late last year there were still a couple of 4/4s with the Ford gearbox and I believe that the Plus 4 was fitted with them first as stocks of the older boxes were run down.

Thanks Jays, I'm pretty sure it is the ford box.

I have a smart and a morgan 4/4 and I think that the smart as the edge over the morgan, Mind you the smart was not so smart early this week when the fan belt went and cooked the engine, there was no warning as the first thing to pack up is the senser to let you know the engine is cooking. result new engine fitted. was told that the stop go system places to much pressure on the belt, but the car only had 10,000 miles on the clock, now looking for a 2lt mini cooper for her in doors.and that will drive all over the morgan for sure. michael

Ahh,

So it's your Sport Grey 4/4 Sport in New Elms at present?
I called in on the way back from Bovington...
Sorry to hear about the 'not so smart' Smart! Hope it's all sorted!

How about a Cooper D Clubman? Join the gang grin2

Cheers,

Sorry to hear that, I will let my Son in law know as he has a Roadster as his w/end toy, he can at least get the belt changed if not sell it.

Good luck with Mini hunting.

Richard

Back in 99 Mr Reckiit & Colman was taken over over night by Benkiser. As the R&C European Engineering Director I was surplus to requirements.

Having lived 12 years abroad in Europe & Africa recruitment firms tried to box me into jobs abroad but my eldest was 13 so we wanted to be in the UK.

I worked as a consultant for 2 years to avoid moving. We had a project near Waterloo in Belgium & the team I led all hired Smarts.

The best bit was due to the flappy padle gearbox we would race the dual carriageways & roundabouts. With skill you could get the standar Smart onto 2 wheels.

They are just such fun cars. I love them.

Hi Richard, we use the smart behind our motorhome, this is the 2nd smart we have had, the first was a 2006 and it was great, this is a 2011 and was rubbish from the start, first the lights did not work, then the belt went when we took a day trip to switzerland, called out smart who got the car taken to a smart centre then we heard nothing, 37c all day the shops did not take our bank cards and it was a sunday, went to the smart centre on the monday and they had done nothing with the car, after lots and lots of blue words I got them to look at the car and was told it needed a new engine, and could take a week to fix, after lots more blue words got a replacment car and went back to germany, smart was total rubbish and did not help us at all, so this will be our last smart. I loved the car but just can,t trust it any more. I checked smart forums and a lot of new smarts are reporting the same fault from the stop and go system. michael
