I can't quite believe it but I managed to get there in the end. Link to photo below.

I could not have done this without the invaluable help from Frank and Paul from MES Ltd who supplied the Y-Splitter.

I did not check what type of connectors I had & as my car is from 1998 it turned out to be bullet as opossed to the later econo seal type. This meant that to solve the problem I had to change the connectors working inside the tyre well. Space was tight but determination prevailed.

When the temporary brake light is not in use it is easily removed.The female connecter is held in place by velcro as Frank suggested. I then made a loop using a cable tie & used another cable tie to secure it to the velcro. Now it is very easy to pull out with a hook. This saves the need to remove the spare wheel everytime you want to connect the temporary break light.

The Y-Splitter made this all possible. I did not think that I would be able to tackle this job myself but Frank spurred me on. Now I am one happy Morganeer!

I have acquired a case for the luggage rack of my 2008 4/4 which unfortunately covers the high level 3rd brake light. Once again I know that these things must have been covered before but for UK only driving:-

1) Is it illegal to have it covered?

2) Am I likely to get stopped by the rozzers and if so how do they view it?

3) Is there a very simple solution as an alternative to the ones on this thread as I am even less technically minded than the OP!

2) No, it is unlikely. How they view it would depend on the officer(s).

3) The Simmonds leather strap with brake light is easy to use. Your local Morgan service agent should be able to fit an easy plgin solution for you.

Thanks Soleng, that's what I suspected.

The general consensus seems to be that if stopped a warning would probably be the result unless the officer was in a bad mood or such like. If a ticket was given do you or anyone else know if it would result in points on the license?

I may investigate the Simmonds strap however.

I have just ordered an LED supplementary brake light. It has already been shipped. I will post photos when I get it rigged up.

If you had a roll bar a high level brake light could easily be fitted to that and permanently wired.

This solution worked for me, and was as cheap as chips:- Drilled a tiny (~1mm) hole in the bottom of the swan-neck brake light lens, just big enough to take the 2-core cable supplied with one of these . There's just enough room to scotch-lock to the two wires inside the light unit (or you could cut and solder), and then snip the cable at a convenient length just outside the lens, replace the lens, and fit your choice of coded bullet connectors, or a small plug and socket from Maplin. The Ebay brake light can be attached to your case (or case cover) with adhesive velcro pads, and removed when not needed. The angle of the brake light array is adjustable. The tiny wire tail, with its connectors, can be tucked out of sight under the swan neck. Voila

Well, I got mine sorted. I bought a lightweight high level light (as used on motorcycles apparently) and attached it to a leather cross strap on the case by way of very strong velcro pads (sellotape brand from Staples).

Strangely the cable to the swan style fixed light already had a male/female connector on it where it came out of the bottom of the light "arm" so off I pottered to the local auto electrician who put a male plug on the end of the new light cable.

Works a treat and is very secure. Total cost £21. Result!
