I have recently purchased a plus 4 and would like if possible to undertake some of the simpler maintenance tasks myself, even if it is 30 years since I last worked on a car. As a basic requirement can anyone recommend a suitable jack and maybe also axle stands, I believe the jack needs to be low profile but I am sure someone will confirm if that is the case.
One further question, the car is 2011 and has 2000 miles on the clock, it had its first service at 1000 miles approx 1 year ago. I believe a service is recommended once per year, do you think that it requires a serviced having done only 1000 miles since the last one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The trads need frequent greasing of the king pins. Two axle stands, a garage jack, a rolling creeper, a grease gun and paper towels is what you need to ensure long life of your front end. I do this once a month.
A yearly change of engine oil is usually recommended, but I would think that with short milage a biannual engine service is enough. This is what the on-board computer on our BMW keeps telling us.

Got mine from Halfords. Not the best quality in the word, but does the job. From memory, the trolley jack was 2 tonnes ( doesn't say on the jack).
There was a case in our area recently where a couple of lads were working on a car supported just on a jack. One was underneath when the jack let go. The car came down on his head. Moral: use axle stands.
( I believe he survived, by the way).

I have axle stands and a trolley jack.
It can be quite tricky getting the jack in at the back as clearance is low.
I service mine annually but I do c 3-5 k

You should always remember there are some things that have a mileage interval (oil and filter change, time may also come in to this if the car's not doing enough miles) and some that have a time interval (cooling water/brake fluid change) if you carry out this work fine, if not it's best to take the car to a good garage/dealer and they should do what's required but they'll always err on the safe side so some stuff will get done more often than may strictly speaking be required.

Hi Henry, don't stint on the quality of the axle stands............they're the only things between you and getting squished!  Also take great care in placing them. The trolley jack was the best thing I ever bought....makes doing things oh so simple and yes it must be "low profile" as clearance is definitely a problem and you need to have a bit of room for a block of wood.  Neil.

I bought a trolly jack and axle stands from Machine Mart, good quality and do the job brilliantly.
and yes agree with others, oils and filter changes once a year for lower mileage is sufficient.

Have made 2 x 8"x2" approx 15" long wooden platforms, drive the rear wheels onto them platforms first, then you should find the jack will trolley underneath a lot easier.
