I regularly lift the car +4 on its front cross member before lowering it onto axle stands. I become a little concerned when I think of the weight being borne on the centre of the cross member. Does anyone have experience of cross member distortion? All the best Tony

None - mine stays true - are you sure you are actually lifting on the cross member if you're getting distortion?

Tony,
See also John+4's response to Henry dog's recent post on jacks and stands. There is a good link for jacking points, plus one of DaveW's excellent guides.

The Gomog jacking diagram is ok as far as it goes.
However the junction of the Z member and a cross member is a strong point, so lifting there is fine.
The centre of the rear cross member, yes that's ok (Gomog agrees) but I'd not suggest the centre of the front cross member as the weight is considerably more, and there may be a balance issue. Also, not all chassis are fully welded there (Woodstock was - after I rectified matters).
The one thing never to do, is jack on a Z section. I've seen many Morgans with bent chassis rails as a result.
