hi, i seem to have an oil issue... popped out earlier in the car, 1983 4/4 with 1.6 cvh, and when i came home noticed quite a bit of oil on the drive. had a look under the bonnet and noticed its pretty damp on the front right side of the engine, first though was sump plug but as i delved further it seems to be coming from slightly higher up. so started her up and oil literally pours out. i'll admit i'm not to familiar with the cvh, but from my observation and also from the diagram here... http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/cvh.htmli'm thinking that the gasket for the oil pump has failed. i've checked the two bolts i can reach and both are snug. does anyone have any advice or guidance please? should it be required is the gasket replacement fairly straightforward? thanks

IF it's the same as the X-flow, there is a rubber oil seal under the plate. This can 'dry' out / perish thus allowing the pool of oil. Have had similar with my X-flow...

Could it be the oil pressure line? mine recently fractured where it joins the one shot oiler manifold, on the right hand side of the bulkhead and was dripping on the drive in a variety of places, depending on where the drop of oil dripped from the pipe as it travelled down. The pipe enters the block just in front of the filter.
Oh and by the way, I like your surfing website, I found that a few months ago when trying explain to the kids what we had for bellyboarding before those foam/polystyrene affairs

Dont panic I brought my CVH from London up to the frozen North in the mid 90s and they had not fitted the sump on slack as a spaniel's ear . I stopped about half way for a rest and a chap said , You have oil all over mate " my reply was heard it before " no take a look " I phoned the garage ( gone now ) . Left the car at the Little Chef and jumped a taxi to the station and home via train and taxi . The car was picked up and corrected and my bills for the journey paid . Although I had travelled well over 100 mile the engine was ok , but I stick to Mobil 1 have done for many many years.

thanks, i'll double-check any pipes but when i cold started it to get it back in the garage it looked like it was definitely coming from the gasket onto the pump.
so if so, and the pump needs to come off to replace the gasket, is it fairly straight forward or does it reguire removing all the cambelt covers etc? i can't quite see with my torch to figure it out!
thanks for the site compliments sawman, good discount available for fellow morgan owners. the boards look stunning strapped to the rear racks. and they surf infinitely better than any foam thing!

You'll need to strip down the front of the engine, covers & cam belt including crank pulley wheel and sump. If you are doing it yourself, don't forget to mark the position exactly of the cam and the crank. The oil pump is driven by the front of the crank and can be incorrectly fitted easily which can smash the pump gears.
