I would like to get like I used to have in Germany winter tyres on steel rims for my Mercedes C class. It has the AMG sports pack fitted and thus 245/35/18 & 225/40/18
Does anyone know who can supply those or if I can use narrow tyres & smaller rims without fouling the brakes?

If anyone can tell you about tyre sizes talk to Paul Harris, advertises in Miscellany.

I just bought winter tyres from tyremen online and had my local garage fit. I bought vredesteins (good rating from Evo as cold weather tyres but they ship all makes. No connection other than as happy customer..

Your manual will recommend the correct winter size.
No need for steels as long as you protect and clean wheels, winters aren't bad enough.
I'd pick a preferred brand and find a local tyre place that deals direct rather than through a broker. Most have a good relationship with a particular mfr.
Lots get good reviews, I'll be putting Dunlops on.

Talking of winter tyres, if anyone wants a set of winter tyres and alloy wheels to fit a current BMW series 3, I'm about to put them on eBay!

Yep just did the same. I called them up and they were very helpful.

Apart from the Morgan, which 'aint going out in snow, all of my cars (even my Transit van) have a spare set of wheels shod with winter tyres. The wheels get changed in November & swapped back in April. I equipped my V70 with them about 4 years ago and was so chuffed with them that I kitted them all out. Since I did it, when we've been skiing I haven't had to put the snow chains on once however bad the conditions, although our V70 is only the front wheel drive version. When we went to the alps on Jan 7th this year it had been snowing since early december without much let up and the snow was pretty deep. Going up the mountain we went past a good half a dozen urban 4X4's such as ML's and X5's putting on chains; we sailed to the top with no trouble. When people say to me that they have no need for winter tyres as they have 4WD I say "and that helps you stop better in the snow ? " Mountains aside, I'm convinced of their value as we seem to get a proper cold snap every year, and even when it's not snowing the traction and stopping distances in heavy winter rain are noticeably better.

I had them all the time in Bavaria & they were great. However as my wife just pointed out now I have invested it will be mild winters all the way!

My plan is to get an outdoor carcoon. From November to February, put the Morgan at the front of the drive and only take it out on reasonably dry days with temp above 5 degrees Centigrade.
