Don't need chains - just check the webcams before setting off. Most key passes have a live camera feed from them somewhere online.
Should be alright midsummer - key is to avoid peak holiday times - it's not much fun doing the passes in a queue of caravans. Watch out for bikes too - some of them are a bit crazy...

Just tried the Susten and Grimsel passes today, both closed and snow ploughs digging them out. Hope it's not a sign that winter has come early this year. Got a few funny looks in the Morgan going up and down the passes but great scenery if a tad fresh.
If anyone is coming to Switzerland and wants info on the Bernese Oberland area (Interlaken in the center), although most info is available on the net, having lived here for six years know of a few quieter passes etc not always on the tourist maps, just PM me and I will try to help.

Swissmog, fine with the passes but do you have advice on avoiding  I fancy a longer trip next summer but don't fancy getting stopped for driving at the speed limit again.

Afraid it's a fact of life here, break the speed limit and you pay, mobile cameras appear for a few days in all sorts of places, good earners for the cantons.

Don't forget to buy a vignette (sticker) for the Swiss motorways as you enter the country. Even if you don't intend to go on the motorways the signs and the roads keep trying to get you on them and the police love stopping vehicles with foriegn plates to check.
