Sympathy for the fallen has no reflection on one's political standpoint. The two are quite separate.
Agree whole heartedly. The majority of those who fought (on all sides) in WW1 and WW2, imho, were doing, what they perceived to be, their duty and it is my belief that very few actually wanted to go to war. When I see the graves of soldiers from those conflicts, no matter which side they were on, and I see their ages (so many under 20), I feel huge sympathy for what they endured and sacrificed. To me the poppy represents exactly what Martyn said, "sympathy for the fallen" and with respect to the British troops, a great appreciation for their ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

Isn't that like saying you feel sympathy for the burglar that just broke into your house after hitting him over the head. Well not me. He gets what he deserves in my book.
Political views in my experience tend to be a good moral indicator as to were a persons sympathies my lie.
Therefore politics and sympathy by their nature are intertwined.

Politicians start wars, the military is used to carry them through and generally suffers to a greater degree than the politician.
You are welcome to your opinion but don't confuse the man with the gun, and yes that is my father in the picture so I do have some position on this thread.
I do however respect other peoples personal viewpoints.

TRMAN, I see you are on - line; so a Quick Reply from me. I see you list France as one of your abodes. I just wonder how your views sit with your neighbours..........
In my small 'Commune' regardless of politics or nationality, we are united in honouring the sacrifice of those who died doing their duty. Whether you agree with the politics at the time you are asked to serve your country or not. My family has fought for both Germany in WW1 and Britain in WW11 - My Grandfather had no choice in WW1, but was at the Head of the Line in WW11, BECAUSE he believed it to be a Just Cause. My fathers 'Medaille de la France Liberee' is above me as I write this.

As a Post Script to my original posting, I should add that my Maternal Grandfather died in 1921 due to the effects of 'Gas Poisoning' whilst fighting for the British.
I think this gives a more balanced view, but unfortunately it was not the only fatality we as a 'family' have suffered as a result of 'war'.

Sympathy for the fallen of both sides is nothing to do with one's politics, but as articulated here just an appreciation for the sacrifice made on our behalf. This is what the Poppy represents to me, nothing more, nothing less.

Robert van Dyke aka Camelman I also live in a small commune and actually I am not sure of their views. There is a sizable memorial to the resistance just along from the village and Oradour-sur-Glane is not far away. I think I can guess what their views are. I appreciate for you having members of your family on both sides this is an extremely raw subject. WWII touched most families including mine my father was RN north Atlantic convoys..... I wont go into medals cause that would be just point scoring.
