He was a bit before my time and interest in F1 but certainly extreme talent, what his disposition was on a personal level I would not profess to know.

Yes he would be a god my rules applied - thanks for the link. Achieving is good but the manner inwhich greatness is achieved matters most and lingers in the memory. I'm old fashioned enough to believe that it is more important to value people and treat them all with respect and dignity than win at all costs. Luckily I have witnessed both and learnt the lessons well.

Kimi - he is Finnish, unless you have been there and met them don't try and judge them. They are different. Same way they probably think we are. I've sailed with a few, during my years with a N.American oil company - all interesting characters in their own way.

Have to disagree re: Mansell. Given where he came from and what he achieved, through adversity, I would say he is one of the most successful drivers of all time. Records often don't tell the whole story. My absolute hero.

Now the genie is out of the box (i.e. thread drift way from the current crop) can we take a view on the "Best of all time?" question... Results wise it would have to be Michael Schumacher, but you already have my views on him  and as Cicerone rightly says, it is not just about results. It's not so straight forward because the driver is only part of the equation. For example would Jackie Stewart have won without the Tyrrell Ford, Damon Hill without the Williams Renault, Alian Prost without the McLaren Honda... etc. etc. Anyway, here goes... Jim Clark is probably the one for me. A gentleman driver, a true sportsman, and supremely talented behind the wheel of almost any car (F1, F2, saloons Lotus Cortina, etc.) A career tragically cut short in the F2 race at Hockenhiem (due to a Lotus failure?) before he could fulfil his destiny results wise.

I am biased because I relate to him but all the drivers 'above' him in terms of results had a leg up, whereas Mansell didn't. Nobody is naive enough to think that F1 is based solely on talent; even Senna was heavily backed financially. I just think that relative to his background he achieved huge success and his natural talent and tenacity won out where otherwise a budget would have made up the shortfall.
Edit: except Jim Clark, who obviously I wasn't there to watch but judging by documentary evidence was the most naturally talented man to ever grace an F1 car.
