Most of my fillings have shaken loose driving the Morgan, I wouldn't be surprised if a relay had come loose from its moorings.

Sometimes you get a bad contact on electrical components due to too high a resistance in contamination of the surface of contacts. I have never understood what it is but it used to be a common practise to clean the edge connectors on computer boards with a clean ink eraser before replacing a component. It is amazing how often it works. Since learning that trick I have removed and replaced motorcycle relays and ECU connectors two or three times to rub the contact surfaces together and ensure good contacts before rushing for a replacement.

Fretting corrosion is a form of accelerated atmospheric oxidation which occurs at the interface of contacting materials undergoing slight, cyclic relative motion. In electric contacts involving non-noble metals, fretting action can cause rapid increases in contact resistance, proceeding to virtual open circuits in a matter of minutes in the worst cases.

Very interesting. Thanks for that Neil.
I did some research on the topic and it is nice to know there is an explanation for what I have been doing. Seems it can be caused by even minute movement due to vibration or differences in thermal expansion.
It also makes me realise that there is a good reason for oiling the body joints (as recommended) on our Morgans. I wonder if that explains some of the corrosion and paint bubbling around fittings and joints, particularly on the Aero series.

I think you hit the nail on the head with regard to vibration. its probably more critical in a Morgan where the cars do tend to bounce around a fair bit. Perhaps the old fashioned method of screws on terminals is not such a bad idea. Of course it's less time consuming to have push in contacts when building a car. On the other hand it's much easier to change a component if required. The bubbling problems could be caused by a multitude of reasons including reactions to different type of metal. It's interesting that on a boat you have a sacrificial anode on the hull to stop corrosion. This I understand is caused by electron reactions. Not sure an Aero would look quite right with an anode trailing behind the car.

It's interesting that on a boat you have a sacrificial anode on the hull to stop corrosion. This I understand is caused by electron reactions. Not sure an Aero would look quite right with an anode trailing behind the car. This opens a up a whole new are for MMC to charge for on the extras list....

I had a sacrificial anode bar in the door of my Triumph Herald in 1969. Unfortunately the whole car rusted away leaving only the doors! It took about 3 months.

I spray my critcal contacts every 2 years with contact cleaner when I also waxoyl the body.
