I knew him well from Birth only heard him swear once he dropped a 4 stone fish crate on his broken foot in the middle of winter late 1960s and shouted Bast*rd . I heard him and could not belive it . The only time I saw him get angry was 1968 I had a Rover 2000 the garage was doing a repair and left the engine open to the weather , my old man was going to have a punch up with the bloke in charge after I had payed out £600/- for the car all the mechanics started to crowd around then the bloke saw sence . He did tell me one well known loud mouth idiot at his place of work called him lazy and ended up on his back asleep all his work mates hushed it up and when the bloke came around he said "sorry I should not have called you that " My old man was trying to sort out the job before he told them to get stuck in instead of jumping in both feet first and getting someone killed ( it was down the mines early 1960s ) . At his funeral the vicar had to run to the church and was stopped by a local saying " Whats the hurry vicar " after being told, he said "John he was the nice'est person in the village" ( They wont say that about me , more like the wicker man ) . I asked for a Union Jack to be draped over his coffin as it was driven threw the village with the u/taker walking in front with all his regalia stuff . I know he would have loved the flag but not the pomp . Followed him all over as a toddler 3 years old sneaked out my grans to look for him so they tell me and was found in the stable 1/4 mile away with the horses and a few of my dads mates by my dad . On a Wednesday a/noon used to go out in the Mog with him he could not get the grin off his face as we went around scrap yards and garages just to waste an a/noon he loved it . I think he lived a second youth threw my brother and me and made up for what he lost during the war dont think he ever grew up .
