Very embarrassed 4/4 driver on Sunday, I knew the fuel was very low but reckoned I could make my local Shell garage, 'trusty' fuel gauge read empty - quarter full - empty - quarter full subject to incline - decline ....it was empty, busy roundabout and 200 yards push onto the forecourt - could have been worse!!!

I'm not sure if I've ever got near empty, my gauge shows only 7/8ths even with petrol right up the filler neck, so, in theory, I should still have a gallon or so when it's hard against EMPTY.
(Not willing to test this out, I usually fill up after 350miles and carry a spare 5lts)

Useful info Tuftie (and sorry for your blush ). I usually fill my 4/4 when it gets down to the quarter mark, but went past T*sco's a couple of times last week with the needle heading west of 1/4. "Filled" up with 8 gallons (ie the pump was clicking every two seconds or so) but have just managed to get another 6 gallons in today having only covered 120 miles since the previous fill (gettting about 48 per gal since purchase joy).

So, based on your experience and my magic capacity tank, I will take "1/4" as being empty !

Cheers

Jeremy

My gauge doesn't move until the car has consumed 5 gallons, so I have never taken it much below half-full. I tend to us the tripmeter as my guide.
