I wrote something but seems pointless to try to put forward ideas at this stage. Andyman and I seem to be in the minority and seen as idealists.
So if nobody else (or very few) agree with you, you sulk?
Whilst there were a couple of comments back to you guys I think it was due to the subtle 'digs' within your posts. I refer you to "rose tinted spectacles" amongst others.
Your opinions are valid, the points you raise are up for discussion and debate; but please dont throw your toys out the pram becuase few agree with you? You are on a Morgan forum after all so its inevitable that we will be keen on the cars!
Oh, and for throwing comments into the discussion, my Aero 8 S2 didnt leak at all, my Aeros Supersport didnt leak, My current Aero 8 only leaks in torrential rain. However my Ferrari 348GTS (1994) leaked like a sieve, as did my Z3M (slightly).
I hoped to stimulate a balanced debate about the lonterm survival of MMC and its products, having being a customer twice and contemplating a third purchase.
I worry if MMC are not interested why a potential customer may be lost. If MMC have enough customers who are happy with their product to keep them viable in the longterm, and know that whatever they make they will sell it, has got to be the best business on the planet.
I consider myself a Morgan enthusiast, but will challange why MMC has not mastered the art of creating a water proof soft top after 100 years.
I'm also extremely gratefull for details of other cars which hoods that leak and paint that bubbles so keep those coming through so I can create my 'Avoid' list.
I have no problem with differing opinions, just seemed to be like torrential rain. sometimes its best to accept that you lost.
but i am basically with andyman. but we need to make sure that Morgan owners are not like Honda and Cadillac where the average age of ownership gets older every year.
To allow Morgan to offer good products they need to sell more and this either needs one hell of a good marketing campaign to sell the MMC "features" may be on the scale of the catholic church.
Or the customer base needs broadening, to bring in people who would otherwise buy either useable classics like KWE Jags http://www.kwecars.com/, rebuilt merc pagoda's or from the more eccentric owners from other sports car brands.
Its always been much easier to have a very small piece of a very big pie than the other way around.
I agree i had a 412 that leaked terribly and the same with a previous gen QP the boot seemed to be more of a bathtub, this caused a few problems as the battery was in the spare wheel well.
I and others I'm sure read that the first time and have mulled it over/took it seriously. Repeating yourself over and over also doesn't constitute 'balanced debate', in fairness. It is not empirically true that all modern Morgans leak or have bubbling paint, nor is it true that they 'don't care' (someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they altered the new Plus 8's roof after feedback from the pre-production car, for example).
This isn't an official Morgan forum so you aren't going to get CM popping along saying sorry to you personally. I'm honestly not sure what you want as resolution considering you have a poster above you who has spent considerable sums of money purchasing new Morgans and has been happy with their waterproofness. People's experiences vary, clearly.
On the flip side, I'm sure not all of them are waterproof, especially when you don't know how they get treated over the years, however, if you wrote a list of cars whose roof systems either leak slightly from new or develop leaks over time it would be very long indeed. Ditto paint bubbling. Would you like to hear about my Honda with bubbling and corrosion? Or my MINI that had to have the entire rear passenger door replaced due to glass delamination and a new bonnet for a simple stone chip? The Volvo that still leaked after having the driver's door seal replaced?
I've seen Boxsters that leak (!), brand new Ferraris with awful, awful panel gaps and paint quality, etc. (including Enzos). In fact, the only car I know of that is delivered with genuine mirror finish paint is the Rolls-Royce Phantom. I even knew of a new Nissan 350Z that was crashed pre-delivery and then repaired in secret so that the customer wouldn't know.
Problems afflict all marques, the difference is that you have focused on one particular issue that you really care about. Yes if you had just spent 80k on a car and the roof leaked like a sieve then you would be rightly upset - but how often is this true? Not always, as above, and if a lot of owners only use their cars in fair weather there won't be the data there for the company to make rectifications should any have been fitted with leaking roofs.
I find it much more disturbing that people who stretch their budgets buying family cars from huge manufacturers get shonky diesel particulate filters, engines that lunch themselves, clutches that are consumables rather than wear and tear, water ingress issues far beyond a small leak and electronics placed next to them that fry the ECU, etc. These are supposedly 'simple' issues that due to one reason or another are known about and still put on sale, which is dreadful business practice from some companies who built their reputation on perceived reliability. What about fires and supercars, which cost a hell of a lot more? Not uncommon but very serious.
Yes, Morgans aren't cheap but part of the equation is that they offer the kind of charisma, heritage, noise, looks and interior that you can't get anywhere else - so leeway is given regarding foibles. The same is true of Lambos, Ferraris, Koenigseggs, Paganis, etc. They aren't a doomed concern because of some quality issues but conversely they clearly aren't a static concern either.
Positive change is of course brilliant, I would suggest writing a letter with an expression of interest in a new model raising your concerns so that someone directly from the factory can reply to you?
I think the stuff which is just a toy ( basically your list of super/hyper cars), 150k+ is a different story, that's past realistic aspiration for most people.
The point of Morgan i always though is it was possible to be an aspiration, when you have grown up, not just a poster on a school boys wall. With hardwork dedication you can make your dream of owning a 3-4 year old car for 70k come true, and it be a bit different from the german Audi/BMW/Merc suit.
I can accept a Noble, caterham, lotus having some issues like leaking as they are track/performance cars.
And when it comes to your point of the letter, i emailed Mark Ledington (sales director), and in round about terms was told that i could buy a car, but i should expect that it doesnt work in the same way as the big boys and thats not the point of a Morgan. I asked if i bought a car and drove it like a "normal car" then they would fix all the issues that arose in a timely manor and there was a long silence.
I don't think there's a cut-off for when something becomes a 'toy' based on price - people spend an awful lot of wedge on cars because of passion and some will use their cars as dailies because they are now told they can do it. Same goes for what is considered 'realistic' - a lot of people would consider a car four times the national average salary to be anything but a dream.
At least they are honest when they say it isn't going to be exactly the same as a mass produced car because they don't have the facilities. All these brands attract a certain 'type' of customers and those that don't fit the profile invariably get annoyed and go elsewhere. That is true of most things though, not just cars.
I am confident that a Simmonds hood will not leak - period, BUT a Simmonds hood costs £2500 plus which is hard to justify when you expect the hood supplied with the car to be "Fit for Purpose" -- In fct, little needs to change with the hood - the crazy front flaps need to be sorted as per the Simmonds version and the sidescreens have to be fitted with a workable mechanism which stops them bowing out at speed and letting the rain in. Also needs a few foam bits(Thanks Dave W!!) and it works well
I can't understand why this can't be done by the factory - I have done so in a "Heath Robinson" manner with velcro and foam bits a workable solution would not be that difficult and would greatly add to the feeling of worth when getting a new car!!
Rant over -- I have actually had great fun devising all the little "Improvements" to my car, but I do feel a bit short-changed by the factory in that I had to do them to a new car. Now, if I had spent 80K or more even, I would not be a happy camper.
I don't expect a Morgan to be as leak-proof as a 2012 Mercedes SL or a Rolls Phantom Drophead,so i'll never be disappointed. That, and besides,my Harley has no roof at all,i'm used to getting slightly humid after a ride/drive in the rain.
