Further to this - Milton Racing supply an adaptor plate to mount a Type 9 5 speed box to your original Ford 4 speed gearbox bell housing, you can then keep the starter in the same position and retain the hydraulic external slave cylinder.

That's handy to know.
What about cable and rod operated clutches? Both are on Morgans...

Not too sure about rod operated Graham but you can no doubt rig up a cable clutch. I'm not really a fan of cable operated clutches hence I'm keeping the hydraulic external slave cylinder. Retro Ford do a bellhousing and concentric slave cylinder if you prefer that set up.

OK, thanks. Mine has a cable clutch and the 4/4/4 I'm hoping to acquire (presently engine out) is rod operated. Did think it would make sense to look at a gearbox swap as the car is partly dismantled anyway...

Mine has a cable clutch and the 4/4/4 I'm hoping to acquire (presently engine out) is rod operated. Is the cable clutch on yours original or has it been modified? I ask because the rod operated item is a pig to adjust and I've often thought about doing the conversion.

Cable on a '76 The 4/4/4 I mention is a '73 (not mine yet - but it's the first Morgan I sat in). Not sure how long rod operation was used, but I seem to remember somewhere pre-'71 it was cable operation. Rod operation only came in for a few years, before returning to cable... I prefer hydraulic, but having said that, I've had no problems, so far, with my cable operation (I do carry a spare though - a foible from my TVR days! )

I was told by John Worral recently (he supplied me a spare clutch cable as I thought I should have one on the shelf)...

My 1969 4/4 with the X Flow Kent engine has a hydraulic clutch; the slave cylinder mounts to a cast-in bracket on the bellhousing on the passenger side and pushes the operating rod backwards towards the bulkhead.The slave cylinder is a Mk 2 Cortina item and is quite expensive if you need to buy new or re-manufactured.
