Maybe these number plate checking systems they have in police cars would flag it up now? I'm not sure.... If, for example, a D Type Jag passes the police, does the ANPR system flag up that the number plate is a stick on black and white job? Or that it should be stopped? I don't think it does. ANPR is generally used for the toe rags who drive around uninsured.

A lot of sage coments, thanks chaps. Perhaps I will stay fully legal, although with all the other mods. that most of us will have done e.g. new steering wheel, new mirrors, wheel spinners, sports exhaust etc, I don't think different plates will cause a melt down in the legal system!

As you can imagine there is a lot of discussion on plates within the M/c fraternity. Motor Cycle News the weekly auricle asked for a Gov ruling - the answer was...if u get stopped for an infringement and the plate is not legal u will get told to change it and take to an MOT station within a week for verification.BUT it would be v unlikely that u would get stopped for a plate infringement itself.I have seen Silver letters/numbers on a black background on new bikes - and they do look good - say on a Bonneville - but IMHO this would be pushing it if it was done on an M3W - tempting as it seems!! Both are illegal bike or M3

Ian, Thank you for pointing me to the previous thread. It would seem that I am not alone in my dislike of modern plates, however,I have no wish to fall foul of the long arm of the law for such a minor thing so on balance I think I will leave well alone. Reg.

Yes, can't blame you for that Reg. I should add that the situation has changed since that older thread, in the last year there has been a tightening of the laws on so called show plates making it much harder to get black & silver plates for post '72 cars.
Shame as the older style suits the car better I think.

I run black and silver plates on my 92 Plus 4 and have never had a problem. I do keep white and yellow ones in the car in case plod does stop me but they never have. At MOT time i'll switch them over and then back again.

Reg. Reg I must admit that I mainly run reflective plates in the UK for both legality and visibility; however when venturing across the Channel, I often use the black and silver, as I think they look great. They also go rather well with rather splendid black and silver GB plate (which mounts to the bumper) which I found at a jumble sale. I've only ever had one issue in the UK and that was at one of the Morgan Centenary events; when a beligerent owner took exception to the plate; telling me it had no right to be on the car and "diminished the integrity of the MSCC"I restrained myself from telling him what to do, but the lovely Lady Budster's look of distain left him in no doubt. Her theory is that people like him have very small . . . Bud __________ 2003 - 4/4

Many Aston owner club Members are the same Bud. I suspect your Mrs is correct.
