Ian, Thank you for pointing me to the previous thread. It would seem that I am not alone in my dislike of modern plates, however,I have no wish to fall foul of the long arm of the law for such a minor thing so on balance I think I will leave well alone. Reg.

I must admit that I mainly run reflective plates in the UK for both legality and visibility; however when venturing across the Channel, I often use the black and silver, as I think they look great. They also go rather well with rather splendid black and silver GB plate (which mounts to the bumper) which I found at a jumble sale.
I've only ever had one issue in the UK and that was at one of the Morgan Centenary events; when a beligerent owner took exception to the plate; telling me it had no right to be on the car and "diminished the integrity of the MSCC" I restrained myself from telling him what to do, but the lovely Lady Budster's look of distain left him in no doubt. Her theory is that people like him have very small . . .

What a busybody twat.
I worry more about the fact that the back number is practically concealed below the bumper rather than the fact it is not strictly legal. If I am ever stopped I'll just say "sorry officer I didn't realise. The car came like this when I bought it and I have the standard plates here. I'll swap them when I get home. Ok?"
I do keep white and yellow ones in the car in case plod does stop me
I would think that would make things worse, showing a you are aware of what you are doing so can you have 5 mins to screw them on to be legal would wind him right up ...one thinks
I'd just go for it. There are so many cars about with illegally spaced letters and numbers on their personalised plates...and motorbikes with tiny plates, that I can't see a Morgan with an old number being pulled over. The only hassle is changing the plates for the MOT. You'd have to buy a show plate to get around the latest plate restrictions but then the original black and white plates had no BS markings.
Shame I ended up buying Budsters old reg number which I've grown rather fond of...otherwise I'd get an old style number and go down the black and silver route!
Jays Former Morgan owner. Gone but hopefully not forgotten!
Stick with legit plates, no point winding up old bill unneccessarily and catching a £60 fine. Camera van operators can send you a NIP if they spot you too
Has anyone fitted "dateless" number plates in the old black and silver format to their new Moggie. I think that it is not completely legal but has anyone any experience of this?
The third brake light is the only give away. I imagine plod might do something about it if he has pulled you for speeding or something, but otherwise why not? I have a legal set at home just in case. My 2011 4/4 sport....

The only thing I can add to my replies above and on the other thread is that I have never been pulled up on mine or even had a comment.
I became a little nervous a few years ago when the house next door was bought by a couple of police officers; but my fears were soon averted when I found they themselves had a silver on black plate on their modern Triumph motorcycle (which unlike my Morgan wasn't even a dateless registration).
As far as I'm concerned there are only certain cars you can get away with it, anything modern and your pushing your luck! Kevin has the right idea, a pre '63 cover plate in pressed alluminium on a Trad Morgan. Perfect!
My friend has suggested that I put black & silver engraved plates on my Aero but I'm not to sure, the car is too modern looking I think.
The three wheeler, like a lot of old cars has black and white painted plates. Pressed aluminium plates only started appearing in the mid 1920s but probably weren't universal till the mid 30s.
I'm sorry I started all this chaps but it has made very interesting reading. As I said to Ian, I think I will stay legal as my current plate is a personal MOG plate anyway. As a final thought, are there any insurance implications with black and silver plates?
