The S&S recommended Mobile 1 V twin synthetic oil is $63.00 USD per 6 qt case on Amazon . That's a typical price for Mobile 1 synthetic.

I use a Griots Garage vacuum oil evacuator on low slung automotive engines via the dip stick opening. Seems to do a very through job and I've used it on hot engines to get all the bottom residue out.

My guess it that will work top side on the M3 as well.

Remember, you may get charged VAT and a handling charge if you buy from the US.

I was.

There's a supplier in the UK - I can check but it was easy to Google - somewhere in the South West who suppliedmy Mobil 1 V Twin. 6 quarts for about £90, which is an awful lot of money.

The Harley V Twin synthetic oil is (probably) similar, is cheaper and easier to get hold of.

£90 might seem a lot but then it all depends on how often you change your oil! I may be wrong but I thought that synthetic oil was more stable than mineral oil and therefore the oil changes could be extended.

Synthetic still has a mineral base though...

However, it does seem to have a longer life cycle (according to the manufacturers). smile

Going back to the original post, it's the rpm bit which I struggle with

Firstly, the gap between 2700 and 3500 rpm is not very big! But even after that 2700 and 4000 is not huge. I had understood that there was an electronic limiter on the engine for the running in period, but in my case I can't say I've noticed it. Also, 2700 is quite high (loud!) as a minimum.

I noticed in Calum's (excellent) video that he is able to pull away at much lower revs than me. I've stalled my car three times now when trying to pull away at what I guess was around 2k rpm - it just doesn't like it! It looked (and sounded) like Callum was at much lower revs than this. Despite the recommendation not to go below 2.7k, if you pull away at over 2k in first gear, you have to be very careful with the clutch or you get wheelspin, especially if it's wet... so it's a fine balance.

For the oil, someone posted that the S+S engines supplied to Morgan have already been run on a bench and had their first oil change. So I decided I will just follow the Morgan schedule and let the dealer change the oil at the first service - 1500km.

Mine will certainly pull away gently at about or below 2K though you do need to be less gentle if you want to pull away sideways even in the wet; it has done about 1300 miles and has had its first service so has loosened up nicely.
The sweet spot for proper running seems to be from about 2.7 through to 4 with nothing really to be gained from going higher. I suspect that the cam profiles/timing and the sheer size never mind the layout of the combustion chambers probably dictates that it doesn't pull as cleanly from idle as some engines though it does sound like it is barely turning over even at 3K.
Blipping the throttle on the downshifts is one of the great pleasures of driving it as well as being essential on all sorts of levels so lots of gear changes are a good thing! drive

You must belong to the same club as me, the heel and toe club.
There's nothing like it when you get it just right dropping down a couple of cogs and throwing it into a nice series of bends.
Happy motoring

If you want a giggle, if I pulled away at 2700 rpm, I'd be doing 24mph before I stopped slipping the clutch!

Much more flexible these 85 year old J.A.P.s...

I've hit 1500 miles on mine and can attest to the above. One of the things that was easy to adjust to was because I've had large block diesel engines in many of my previous vehicles. This S&S beastie is all about torque. Its sweet spot is right at 3K and will do that all day without a strain. Lower will cause problems with the transmission and higher is just unnecessary. The Mazda tranny is very nimble so staying in the torque curve is easy. I've run mine up to 5K for short bursts and it is quite capable.

Being honest, and running this thing at high speeds on the open road where crosswinds occur and 'other drivers' has put the fear in me. I like to drive fast for no apparent reason but this M3W does not allow sight seeing or being in the tourist mode. If one does not pay attention one pays. It is a very unforgiving vehicle and does not reward stupidity. However, if the roads are reasonably empty and well maintained then one is rewarded amply!

Totally agree with blipping the throttle. It just sounds good. Yes, the Mazda has synchromesh but back in the day...

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

I've found that I can heel 'n toe, by using the side of my heel on the lower part of the accelerator pedal, seems to work well with a bit of practice.

Have others done anything differently?
