Interesting design Mike, particularly the first one with those cutouts at the spoke ends. Stunning wood....what is it?

Thanks once again for the kind comments. I'm a photographer too and was not happy with the pictures I got yesterday. The weather was bad and the light poor, then the flash brought out the yellows and made them glow, resulting in the first wheel's rim looking a bit wild. Today is beautiful, so I've retaken the pictures and have a more representative bunch of pictures. Same gallery. Here are just a few samples...

The wood is called che chen. It's an extremely hard and heavy wood - a little softer than a rock. The pictures are of the rim with just some oil sealer, so you can see how it takes a natural polish just from its density and mild oil content. I have also cut some of the board on a quartersawn angle where the grain is more like streaks of light and dark; quite stunning. We made a bent wrapping from it that came out amazing. It has the streaking I was after, with some golden hues. When I make a rim from it, it will have the streaking on the front surface, then gradually turn to the swirls with the rounding of the rim. Can't say with any accuracy. It depends much on the rim type, so I'll just say as many hours as necessary until I'm happy with it.

+1 - beautiful wheels, very impressive work. What diameter are the wheels, are they the same as the original wheels?

Thank you. No, these are 15.5" to give a better period look and to not have stubby looking spokes. I'll have one test fitted by a customer soon and we both expect it to work out okay, but I'll make adjustments if necessary.
