I was reading about ethanol a few weeks ago. Apparently there is surplus of it, one major reason being the US subsidies to farmers growing crops to be converted to ethanol as an alternative to grain production. It seems that subsidies for "green" issues are a way of getting the money through instead of for food crop production subsidy. It helps the farmers but creates knock on effects - how to deal with the ethanol being overproduced.
In the long run it shouldn't be an issue but the short term reactionary decisions are causing debate/problems re effects of higher ethanol. Newer cars shouldn't be affected but older ones would need mods to fuel systems to cope (seals/pipes/tanks etc).
An analogy would be the introduction of unleaded petrol.
Hopefully suitable transition measures will be in place -access to low ethanol fuel/financial of some form re upgrades
I won't hold my breath though.............

As a secondary point - isn't brake fluid hygroscopic too?
One of the reasons for replacing it every 2-3 years.
Mind you, it is in a more or less sealed system.
I threw an old bottle away (recycling centre!) a couple of years ago As it had been on the shelf for an unknown time and part used.
It's also a paint stripper!

It's not sealed. Air gets round the seals in drum slave cylinders and the master cylinder has a vent in the cap. Water seems to collect in the wheel cylinders which is why they rust so badly internally.
