No disrespect intended to Beemer owners on here, but where we live, the average BMW Driver is kind of inconsiderate and often a poor driver as well.drive
One thing you could also save money on is a set of indicators. (Its the London Commuter constant Lane Switching technique that has no need of them scared ).

From your list, I'd go for a VW Golf every time.

I may get some snow tyres for MrsW's Polo next winter, but being as I can walk to the railway station to commute and will only be part time from April, the 'holiday car' won't go out in snow.

Frank - I thought all the Beemer nuts had Audis now? Audis seem to be the fastest Mway cars whenever I'm on the motorway. Usually in white...................

I looked at the Yeti a while ago but it was firmly veto'ed by swmbo on the grounds that it was dog ugly and too big.

I'd go for the Octavia VrS too! Apparently the build quality of Sloda is better than VW at the mo. Good deals available on the outgoing model, the new VrS is to revealed at Goodwood in July I'm told and 215 bhp Golf motor !
BMW? Overpriced and underspecced but I suppose the engines are good enough for Morgan to use them !

Adjacent county, so you won't be surprised to know I agree.

thumbs I'm on my third Skoda, currently a 2.0TDI L&K Estate. Excellent car! Wouldn't hesitate in buying another. I like the phrase "under the radar". BMW (and Audi) are just too damned obvious. Autohaus Aylesbury (are they still in business?) wrote to me some time ago "as a company director we assume you aspire to BMW...". Cheeky sods! I replied in truth "I am a bearded Guardian reader and a BMW would not sit easily with me; now please go away!", and they did.

Called at the BMW dealer at lunchtime. Not the ideal customer with weather gear and a windswept demeanor, but they were very amenable. Had a crawl over a 320 touring in the showroom, and checked the three key measures. It's four inches wider than the Golf, but that leaves five inches per side in the drive, so that's tight but OK. Rear seat legroom is much better, and the rear seat backrest although flat, is quite comfortable. Finally the boot space is visibly bigger than the Golf. So far so good then. I've booked a test drive in an automatic on Monday, so I'll make a judgement after that. I've also tried to book an appointment at a VW dealer to check out a GTD, but no response so far. I might still go over on Saturday if they don't get back to me. As I said at the start of this thread, I'm not a BMW fan particularly, but having had a sit in this one, the interior is better than I'd anticipated, and the auto box gets such a good write up by Autocar, it would be a shame not to try one. Cast your mind back and Montezooma had to have a new clutch plate in his manual car. There's a big choice on the BMW website of nearly new with significant discounts which is also tempting.
And so the story continues.

As JTL considers I am a poor and inconsiderate driver, I am sure my contribution counts for very little. If you don't want a car as big as the 320D, then the BMW 1 series is an alternative. Having owned one for six years, its been reliable, comfortable and surprisingly fast. Good fuel consumption as well.

So from a advanced motorist and an Emergency Fire Advanced Driver, I hope you might find it helpful.

Sorry JTL, should have been directed at Frank, not you.

I do feel that comments about certain type of car owners, is unnecessary and very irritating. There are good and bad drivers of all cars. Its not the vehicle, its the driver behind the wheel.

Sorry once again.

We ran a Golf IV PD150 for a long time and it was great. The new Golf VI seems solid.

I am not keen on the style of the new 3-series. It is however very good to drive and well built. I personally dislike the new 3 series design so perhaps now is the perfect time for a 1 year old ex-demo with full spec to make it comfy. Despite the looks you cannot underestimate its development.

Outside choices for value? The SEAT Exeo is built around last gen Audi 100 engineering but they are keen to move so deals are about. Skodas new Octavia or Superb may be a good one to look at as well. VW platform but bags of space and seemingly well built. Given the tax and cost of a new car, length of warranty and standard of build quality in general (Morgan excepted !) I would buy ex-demo or 1 year old these days. Savings are significant. If you can get the service plan that BMW and others offer it would be worthwhile.

re the BMW driver comments. I thought that the loons that used braile to read your rear number plate had left BMW ownership and were driving white A5's these days ? innocent

These days all the BMW I seem to find on the M3/4/A34 are BMW 320i efficient dynamics that are drafting to save fuel at exactly 78mph and never actually accelerating to pass other cars. They take forever, whatever happened to "the third lane is for overtaking, execute the maneuver and return to the furthermost left lane". I am beginning to think the accelerator is now an option these days!

hide wink

No harm done , y/day m/ing as I approached a spot r/about in our village I spotted a Sub coming towards me . Driven by my mothers care worker . Its got to the stage where I trust myself and few others behind the wheel . I had right of way but still uneasy. The women shot over it as I was about to slowly turn right . I spoke to her on the phone at my mothers she claims she was in a hurry . A hurry to her maker. That Tory chap who had a collection of classic cars and lived in a castle almost lost his life and never trusted others again , I am getting like that after that 2005 crash into me . thumbs
