I suspect the import duty there is extremely high, and that's where the extra goes.

What I don't get about China is we have a massive trade deficit with them, almost every consumer product we buy is made there and when we try to send them the odd morsal back, they impose massive import tarrifs.

What's that all about?

Confucius says

“Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself.”

A controlling Government who would prefer their subjects not to buy foreign goods.

I had a dig and found out the following - I cannot vouch for the facts but it would seem "logical" (perhaps to a politician)

Due to the way the BBC is funded (in the UK without adverts, public licence etc etc cannot raise money from competitive sources like Sky etc) they have to be clever.

They are not allowed to "sell" to UK residents
They are allowed to sell material to people outside the UK.

So they need to drive revenue by running

iPlayer to UK people only....
A web site to outside the UK which can have advertising and other revenue streams associated.

Of course we all know that people on the interweb are to stupid to work out how to go around this (search google for proxy and iPlayer) and so it will work perfectly.

I smell a dinosaur getting close to the roaster.

Sad

time has moved on and things im sure will have changed. but some years ago i used to buy ford cosworths and export them to OZ. at the time there was 100% import duty (this was to protect the oz car indstry "they claimed"). anyway, the way around it at the time was to have someone with dual pasport buy the car over here and register it as there's. memory says it then had to stay in this country for a couple of months before it could be exported. once in OZ the car was subject to 10% import duty and could be sold after 6 months. at that time cosworths were very very valuable in oz. im guessing for the person who can put all the right people together, china could become a nice pension project. Food for thought anyway.

Hhmm. Spending a few months on the Gold Coast might be a bit more pleasant than a stretch in a Shanghai prison though. juggle
