As a completely non technical, non mechanical owner I wonder if somebody could give me some advice about improving the braking on my 2002 4/4. Whilst making progress in the right direction is high on my priority list my number one priority in any car is the ability to stop!

My 4/4 stops reasonably well but the lack of assistance with the braking effort encourages me to leave plenty of room between me and the car in front. Unfortunately not all drivers respect my braking space as they seem to think I can stop on a sixpence.

Has anyone had a brake servo fitted as an after sale upgrade - is one available? If so are there any suppliers/installers that would be recommended? Is it a sensible thing to do i.e. is it compatible with the car or does it create other problems?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Which model 4/4 have you got, Manx? I only ask because my 2000reg 1800 already has a servo. Gerry.

Mine is a 1986 4/4 I handed it to Mike & Ben Duncan Heart of England Morgans . Mike fitted it with a servo , went that bit extra and put Billet alloy 4 pots green pads according to Mike and Ben its 40% better and can stop on a sixpence . I feel its more in line with modern cars where brakes are concerned I can just feather the brakes makes my driving more smooth .

You can fit the integral servo + master but there are also remote dual line servos that will still use the original dual circuit brake master cylinder, sometimes out of stock, ask:
http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/product/dual-remote-servo/

ALSO

On these years of cars it is often found that the rears lock before the fronts, so I roller brake tested my 1986 4/4 and Frt:Rr was 50:50. So I fitted a 1.9:1 to the fronts and got close to 66:34 Frt:rr so front now just lock first, confirmed on the rolling brake test to. This also of course reduces the force needed on the brake pedal for the same retardation by 33%. THIS IS WHAT I DID IT IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION FOR OTHERS TO DO.

I did the same minus the servo. A great improvement.

I thought all 4/4s built from around 1998 had servos fitted as standard? My 4/4 certainly isn't over servoed like most modern cars....I thought it hadn't got one at first! My problem is the amount of brake pedal travel...which is excessive.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful comments and suggestions - mine is a 2002 model so it sounds from what is being said that there should be a servo - being non mechanical I have not spotted it and the brake pedal pressure seems very high for a servoed system. I'd better lift the bonnet and get looking when I get back to the IOM!!!!!
