I'll be doing my first oil change in a week or so and have a very basic question. While looking at oil i saw there are 3 types, mineral, synthetic and a combination of the 2.
My suspension uses one of those automatic dispensor systems ie i press my foot on a plunger near the clutch pedal and the front suspension gets lubticated.
I have a 1996 plus 4 and was therefore wondering what type of oil to actually buy ? Id like something that would actually make it easy to start as well since it does have the occasional problem starting at sub zero temperatures

Without wishing to put the question back to you - what does your manual say?
That said I have always understood synthetic oils flow better at low temperatures due to their engineered make-up.

Zetec - SAE 5W/30, 5W/40, 10W/30 or 10W/40. (Haynes) Duratec - SAE 5W/30, 5W/40, or 10W/40. (Haynes) Synthetic oils holds their high temp grade longer so that's good, the first number is the low temp viscosity whether mineral or sythetic.
All these oils, especially when hot, will flush the grease out of the hub bushes very nicely, especially the top one - if you do it with engine oil ripe for a change then you will also add corrosive by-products to the grease. Once you have done that crawl under the front of the car and pump clean grease back in to push out the oil, it only takes two minutes [or just use grease) ;-) PJB.

Castrol Norway advise Castrol Edge 0W/40 Mobil Norway advise Mobil 1 New Life 0W/40
The first number is the thickness at low tempretures so as it gets very cold in Norway you would use a 0W as that is the best at low temps.
Because you are using a wide viscosity oil then that pushes you to a good high quality and expensive synthetic as that stops the 40 side shearing down.
The cheaper semi synthetics are streched to do a 0W/40.

Does oil go off? I have some unopened, but quite old, 5L canisters of Mobil 1. Just wondering if I should throw it out.... Not sure where to throw it either!

Should be fine. Oil disposal - local recycling centre should have a large tank for you to pour it in. But unlike this modern (rappy petrol... it can sit on the shelf for years. If you feel you need to throw it out, I'm sure there are some here who would happily recyle it for you (via an engine ).
