The rectifier it was. Excellent team at Allon White said yes, they'd had quite a few go wrong so after my M3W was delivered back from Kirkaldy on Monday, I charged the battery for the day and on Tuesday afternoon drove to Allon White, where they fitted a new rectifier while I waited. Truly good service with none of the Audi dealership style questionnaire where you have to answer excellent or all their jobs are on the line. Blasted off into the sunset some 2 hours later and with just over 1000 miles clocked, I gave her a few bursts of 4000 rpm and grinned all the way home. Marvellous!

This sort of begs the question of whether a spare rectifier should be in the on board spares kit, that I know we all carry?

Anybody know how much a rectifier is?

And was it a new style 3-point mount Rectifier? I assume that these new ones are better than the early 2-lug jobbies, so should my new car in June come with the decent version?

It was the new 3 mount one and they are £250 from Morgan but probably 100-150 dollars in the USA

I hope you didn't pay £250 from the factory! Your car is under warranty surely?

Highly unlikely, given that when my car went back to the factory for a service, uprated lower wishbones and reduction of bump steer, [which didn't happen], they also changed the rectifier, didn't say a word, but no charge.

On mine the fuel gauge is pretty hopeless I usually put in around 30 ltrs after approx 200 miles (it shows 0% after about 100 miles !) The most I've put in is 40ltrs after 249 miles of 'enthusiastic' driving.

Sorry I wasn't clear - the Regulator and labour was done under warranty and Allon White are an excellent bunch of fellows. The fuel gauge is total rubbish, I agree. I Velcro a plastic 5 litre can under the front cover and then try to drive till it stops, or I chicken out! Both my fill ups so far have resulted in several pints of petrol under the car and a smell of petrol for the next 50 miles or so. 217 miles done on last 37 litres so I reckon there was still 13 left in the tank even though it went down to 14% after 100 miles or so, while I filled at 4%. So thats 26 mpg by my reckoning! Hmm my 3 litre biturbo Audi does 47 mpg at those sort of speeds but that's got a distinct lack of Ash about its personality!

I get around 25 mpg. I have driven for about 20 miles with the fuel gauge showing 0%, but like vm08gan, I too, carry a can of fuel, but it is a bit irritating not being able to rely on the gauge.

The gauge is 'designed' to read empty - 0% - while still offering a reserve tank capacity of somewhere between 1 pint and 3 gallons. It's a safety feature to ensure the driver is alert at all times.

Truthfully, though, the manual does say there is a reserve after 0% and that's fine on mine. I've done 50 miles on 0% and still couldn't get more than 6 gallons in. My gauge reads different figures based on slopes and acceleration / deceleration but apart from that is pretty consistent.

I did find when I tried to brim fill the tank that petrol spilt a bit and the car misfired for a few miles. Again, the manual seems to say don't brim it completely. Seems it might cause a few problems - airlocks?
