I was in China last week. Driving on the highway from the local airport into Qingdao, there is a huge advertising sign. I could see it from quite far off. It's a white Classic Morgan, the Morgan wings and a phone number. Qingdao is over 500 miles from Beijing where the dealer is! And by Chinese standards, Qingdao is not a big city. Made me feel quite emotional.

I've not been to Qingdao for several years but it has a long hertiage of manufacturing and shipbuilding etc. I doubt this has changed and I can see it easily being home to the growing China middle class with disposable income and asirations.

Its quite amazing at the rate at which luxury cars (and other luxury items) has grown over the last 10 years or so in China. When I first used to go there on business the only foreign cars you tended to see were the old type VW Passat (taxis) and the luxury car was the Buick. The last time I went a year ago the first car I saw as I came out of Pudong Airport was a Bentley and next door to the hotel I was staying at in central Shanghai was a Rolls Royce dealership. Chinese folk love designer Western goods. However with the air pollution in many industrialised areas of China I'm not sure I would like to drive top down

In Qingdao I visited the cleanest iron foundry I have ever been to anywhere in the world (you could have eaten off the floor!). They had the most modern equipment and their R&D was mind-boggling.
