If anybody likes nautical matters, this year is the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic with +25 warships on the Mersey from all nations. With the veterans now getting old, this will be the final anniversary and is the reason for so many naval vessels & other activities happening to remember the + 30,000 merchant seamen who perished in the Atlantic. http://www.itsliverpool.com/culture/on-the-waterfront/

I am enjoying the other side of the country keep watching the huge rigs been towed past my place not to far off shore . There has been a few over the last few month . Two today , cant help wonder whats going on are they oil or gas and if so why so many .I will give Jnr a shout she lives over that way and loves the sea .

I'm glad that people are finally making a bit of a fuss about the previously unsung heroes of the merchant navy; without their bravery and sacrifice the second war could not have been won. To venture into a war zone in a slow, unarmed tanker or ship carrying munitions requires special courage indeed, and we should remember all those who perished, and celebrate the few who remain. I wish I could be there to pay my respects.
Re reading Sandy Woodward's account of the falklands operation recently, the casualty whose loss of life most moved me was that of Cunard's Captain Ian North, master of the Atlantic Conveyor. A veteran of the second war, he was the only member of the task force who knew what it was to be sunk by enemy fire, having experienced being torpedoed; yet he volunteered without hesitation, as did all of his crew, who were ready to follow him anywhere.

I quite agree...and that is a great book. Another good one is Four Weeks in May: A Captain's Story of War at Sea by Capt David Hart Dyke who was the Commanding Officer of HMS Coventry in the Falklands when she was sadly sunk.

I park the car up get my bins out and sit and watch for a long while its like 4 huge pylons sticking up from each corner of a base being towed by tugs . No names on them . Along with a good few ships . Cant help but wonder have they found something .

If they have 4 legs on each corner, they will be 'jack up barges' ....normally used by civil engineers for inshore projects... Sewage pipes, sea barriers, piers etc ...however more recently they are being used for offshore windfarms, they may be used for carrying the mono piles or fitted with a crane to batter the mono pile into the sea bed - this is the foundation for the wind turbine tower.

You may be spot on the mouth of the Tees is coverd with these rubbish turbines . If they have 4 legs on each corner, they will be 'jack up barges' ....normally used by civil engineers for inshore projects...
