Hi All

Looking to go over to Germany in a few weeks and I was hoping to take the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. I have heard in the past that putting an Aero 8 on a ferry is not a good idea due to the angle to ramps, humps on ramps etc...

Has anyone any experience of using the ferry please or is it the Chunnel every time? If I can use the ferry it takes a third of the distance off the journey see.

Thanks

Rob

It's worth trying to speak to the ferry company as some carry 'wedges' to enable low slung cars on and off.

I went on a ferry with an F40 that failed the 'coke can' test. This is where you couldn't roll a coke can under it as it was so low. It was slow loading it on - but we did it.

I generally take the tunnel - 30 minutes crossing, stay with the car, no drunken tax free shoppers, more driving at the other end. smile

I can only speak for Brittany Ferries, but they are excellent and careful at where they place cars with limited ground clearance.

I always advise at time of booking that there is a potential issue and you then find that at the terminal, you are lined up with similar cars and then carefully loaded and placed on the ferry.
Normal disclaimer, no links with the company; but this year will be our 7th trip with them using the Morgan.

Been on the ferry in an Aero a few times and no issues. However I much prefer the chunnel - quicker, and less hassle...

Having just loaded a new Plus 8 and Aero SS onto the Esjberg to Harwich ferry, I'd suggest it isn't as big an issue as some people believe it to be. When the on-ramp was steep, we look the ramp at an angle (rather than driving straight on (12-o'clock), we drove onto it at on an angled approach (approx 2-o'clock).

The issue isn't clearance as much as it is sump height.

As has been said, most ferries have small ramps, if required.

Thanks all for your replies - you've set my mind at rest.

I also prefer the Chunnel - problem is it's a 3.5 hour drive to it and then another 1 hour drive the other side compared to a 1 hour drive to Hull and no drive the other side to get to the same place!! No brainer really particularly when limited for time as it makes the difference between two nights stop on route or one.

Thanks again all.

A lot of mainline ferries now have ramps that compensate for tides so less of an issue than it used to be.
